Frequently asked questions
Extractions and wisdom teeth: your questions
Do wisdom teeth always need to be removed?
No. A wisdom tooth that is well positioned and causes no symptoms can stay. It is removed if it hurts, becomes infected, damages the neighbouring tooth or lacks space.
What should I do after an extraction?
Bite on a gauze pad for 30 minutes, do not rinse your mouth or smoke for the first 24 hours, eat soft, lukewarm food, and apply something cold to your cheek if it swells.
Is it normal for the pain to get worse a few days later?
No. If the pain increases 2 to 4 days after the extraction, call the practice: it may be a dry socket, which is easily treated.
How long does it take to heal?
The gum usually closes within one to two weeks; the bone then rebuilds over a few months.
What should I do if it bleeds after the extraction?
Bite firmly on a clean gauze pad for 30 minutes. If the bleeding does not stop, call the practice or, in the evening and at the weekend, the dental on-call service on 02 426 10 26.
