Frequently asked questions
Children's dentist: your questions
At what age should my child first see the dentist?
As soon as the first teeth appear, and at the latest around the age of 2 or 3. An early visit gets your child used to the practice before any treatment is needed.
Does decay in baby teeth need treating?
Yes. Decay in a baby tooth can hurt, become infected and damage the permanent tooth growing underneath. Baby teeth also keep the space for the permanent teeth.
Is children's dental care reimbursed?
Yes. For under-19s, consultations and routine care (check-ups, scale and polish, fillings, root canal treatment) are reimbursed by compulsory health insurance. All our dentists are contracted with INAMI/RIZIV (Belgian national health insurance) and the practice uses third-party payment (tiers payant): you have nothing to pay or advance for this care.
My child is afraid of the dentist. What should I do?
Let us know when you book the appointment. The first visit can simply be a chance to get to know the practice, and every step is explained before it is carried out.
What should I do if my child has broken or lost a tooth after a knock?
Call the practice: we assess your situation and do our utmost to offer you an emergency appointment the same day. Keep the fragment in milk. A knocked-out baby tooth must not be put back in place; a knocked-out permanent tooth must be seen immediately.
At what age should we think about orthodontics?
A first assessment at around 7 or 8 years old helps spot a problem early. To qualify for a contribution from compulsory health insurance, orthodontic treatment must start before the age of 15.
