Practical information
Fees and reimbursement
In Belgium, routine dental care is largely reimbursed by your health insurance fund (mutuelle), through compulsory health insurance (INAMI/RIZIV, Belgian national health insurance). At Maison du Sourire in Ganshoren, all the dentists are contracted with INAMI/RIZIV and therefore apply the official INAMI/RIZIV fees, and the practice uses third-party payment (tiers payant): you only pay your personal share. Larger treatments (implants, dentures, orthodontics, cosmetic treatments) are given a detailed cost estimate before starting.

Reimbursement
What your health insurance fund reimburses
- Under 19: consultations and routine care (check-ups, scale and polish, fillings, root canal treatment) reimbursed
- From 19: part of the cost remains payable by you (patient co-payment), lower if you received reimbursed care the previous year
- One scale and polish a year is reimbursed
- Orthodontics: contribution from compulsory health insurance if treatment starts before the age of 15
- Removable dentures and implants: contribution in certain situations only
- Veneers and whitening: not reimbursed by compulsory health insurance; supplementary dental insurance may contribute

- PaymentThanks to third-party payment, you only pay your personal share (patient co-payment) at the practice: your health insurance fund pays the rest directly.

Frequently asked questions
Fees and reimbursement: your questions
What is the oral care pathway (trajet de soins buccaux)?
It is an INAMI/RIZIV rule for patients aged 19 and over: if you received reimbursed dental care during the previous calendar year, you are better reimbursed for most treatments. Otherwise, the share you pay increases, for example roughly double for a filling, root canal treatment or an extraction. One check-up a year is enough to qualify.
Are the dentists at Maison du Sourire contracted with INAMI/RIZIV?
Yes, all our dentists are contracted: they apply the official INAMI/RIZIV fees, with no extra charges on reimbursed care.
Is dental care for children free?
Yes for routine care. For under-19s, consultations and routine care are reimbursed by compulsory health insurance; because our dentists are contracted and the practice uses third-party payment, you have nothing to pay or advance for this care.
Does Maison du Sourire use third-party payment (tiers payant)?
Yes. The practice uses third-party payment: you only pay your personal share, and your health insurance fund pays the rest directly to the practice. So you do not advance the reimbursed amount.
Are dental implants reimbursed?
Compulsory health insurance only contributes in specific situations. Supplementary dental insurance (through your health insurance fund or private) may cover part of the cost. The cost estimate lets you make the request before treatment.
What is increased reimbursement status (BIM)?
People who have increased reimbursement status (BIM) with their health insurance fund pay a much smaller share, often nothing, for most dental care. Your health insurance fund can tell you whether you are entitled to it.
What should I bring to the appointment?
Your electronic identity card (eID) and, if you have it, the details of your supplementary dental insurance.
